MS Geophysics (December 2014), West Virginia University - GPA 3.8
ExperienceI have privately tutored (mostly math) since 2008, and TA'ed a college-level 300-person physical geology class at Virginia Tech. I graduated in May 2012 with a geophysics degree (3.3 GPA) and successfully ran my own business in the oil/gas industry. I used mathematical and scientific principles every day at work, and I am a proficient writer.
I have studied a LOT of math and physics and know what it's like to not understand what's going on the first time around. The following are examples of courses I took and did really well in: Astrophysics I and II, differential equations, geodynamics, calculus I and II, multivariable calculus, programming in C, mineralogy, igneous and metamorphic rocks, advanced structural geology, volcanic processes, exploration seismology.
When I was a kid I actually had a fair amount of trouble understanding mathematical concepts (especially word problems). Bridging the gap between just calculating and actually problem solving can be hard! With a lot of hard work I overcame that mental block, and now it's what I do for a living. Everyone learns differently, so before I start any lesson I like to know more about what the student's goals are and what their motivation is. I also like to have access to any supplementary materials, and have all problems worked out beforehand to bring to the lesson. Not only is it a good refresher for me, but the student gets to see every single step along the way.
English is my native language, so you should not have a problem understanding me. If you are an international student, we should still be OK. I have worked with people from all over the world so I'm pretty good at deciphering different accents.
I have experience working with kids and adults, and feel free to ask for a resume or CV!
HobbiesHiking, longboarding, skeet/target shooting, reading, running, volleyball, SCUBA diving, learning, oil painting
I also like to volunteer my tutoring skill set to help older kids at the boys and girls club. I just like to teach!
Algebra I & II, Geometry, Math, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Earth Science, Geology, Geophysics, Science, Computer Skills, Geography, 4th - 12th Grade, Study Skills, Writing, Grammar, Vocabulary, Astronomy, Physical Science, I haven't taught it in a few years - but I can try to help with calculus or multivariable calculus
